Music Review: Gungor – Beautiful Things
February 18, 2010 by Brian Smith
Let me preface this by saying that this is not your typical batch of worship tunes. Don’t get me wrong these are songs for JC but definitely in the canned, bubble-gum, pop, Hillsong-y, boomer radio style that we get beat over the head with every time we turn on the radio.
Gungor; was known on their last disc as the Michael Gungor Band, however Michael says that he wanted to change the name of the band so that it wasn’t all about him….uh…mission accomplished?
Anyhow…
The tracks on this release range from spacey (Dry Bones) to funk/blues (Heaven) to straight up rock ‘n roll (Brighter Day) to folksy (You Have Me). It’s really a nice musical journey to go on from start to finish. Gungor is a strong songwriter and surrounds himself with skillful bandmates which help round out the disc really well. I also love the fact that a lot of the songs sound like they were played on broken down instruments that they found in some back alley somewhere. I have a hard enough time trying to make semi-decent ones sound semi-decent!
The band is also very socially conscience and they take great strides to make changes in the lives of Denver’s (where they hail from) homeless and less fortunate. So not only are they a band that follows Jesus but they also live love.
Enjoy a few samplings below and if you dig it like me, then head on over to Amazon and check it out….
